How do I use the Cards tab in Card Sorting?

In this help, we'll discuss how to use the Cards tab to:

  • Add and label cards
  • Add descriptions and images to you cards
  • Import and export your cards in a CSV file
  • Adjust how the respondents interact with the cards

Add and label cards

  • To write a card label, simply open a card and fill in the label
  • To insert more cards into the card sort, click Add card

Add descriptions and images to you cards

  • To add descriptions and images to cards, you have to enable them first. To enable them, select respectively Add tooltip descriptions and Add card images in the options panel to the right
  • Add card descriptions in the same way as the labels
  • Select Hide card labels if you want the respondents to do sorting based solely on card images
  • To add a card image, click the + button and then upload your image
  • Only images in GIF, JPG and PNG formats are allowed
  • The image has to be smaller than 500 KiB and with the maximum dimensions of 1024 x 1024 px

Import and export your cards in a CSV file

Above the cards editor, there is an option to import and export cards stored in a .CSV file. Use this option to easily reuse your cards between Card Sorting studies, or if you want, to bring in cards created somewhere other than in UXtweak.

Use UTF-8 encoded CSV files to ensure that the import works correctly. The simplest way to save your imported file with UTF-8 encoding is to edit it through Google Sheets (click the link for more instructions). To get a UTF-8 encoded file when saving your file in Excel, go to File -> Save As and select CSV UTF-8 before you click Save.

Only the text and the description are imported and exported with the cards. If your cards have images, you will have to re-add them manually.

Adjust how the respondents interact with the cards

  • By default, the respondents don't have to sort all of the cards to complete the study. If you only want complete results, select Require respondents to sort all cards
  • Check Show card order indicator if the order of cards within categories is important to you and you want to highlight this fact to the respondents as well
  • Unless the order of cards is randomized, the respondents sort cards in the order they're listed in
  • To move a card up or down on the list, simply drag-and-drop it to the desired destination. Alternatively, use the Move up/down buttons under the ellipsis button
  • To show the cards to respondents in different order, select Randomize the order of cards
  • If the order of cards is randomized, by changing Number of cards to show to a respondent , you can show every respondent only a certain number from the total number of cards available
  • The Show unsorted cards indicator helps the respondents see how many cards they have remaining
